Teaching philosophy:  I recognize that I am preparing the next generation of nurses who must clinically reason, demonstrate clinical judgment, and practice with competence, caring and integrity to meet the healthcare challenges of the 21st century. I believe that to be an effective educator within a profession, one must be a transformational leader. I teach with enthusiasm, passion, and a sense of purpose. I strive to transform individuals from the role of “student” to the role of “professional nurse”. As a nurse educator, I strive to role model the values of caring, diversity, integrity, and excellence in the way that I structure my classroom and in the manner that I conduct my professional role.

Caring: I create a safe environment that is conductive for learning and active participation. This environment enables the learner to participate, and also conveys my inherent respect for the individual.

Diversity: I recognize and value the uniqueness of all individuals and strive to conduct a classroom recognizing inherent differences in all students.  Specifically, I strive to close the gap between students who have experienced inequities in social determinants of education by providing one on one assistance, mentoring, and support.

Integrity: I use ethical decision-making in my treatment of students and convey the value of integrity in academics and in professional behavior.

Excellence: I believe that excellence is sought by adopting a practice of continuous quality improvement. I pilot strategies in my classroom, seek feedback from students and evaluate my course outcomes to continuously improve my teaching every semester.
